Ottawa Foyers Partage is a non-profit charitable organization that was established in 1982 and operates four homes in Ottawa for individuals with physical and developmental disabilities. In 1987, OFP recognized that computers offered the potential to liberate people with severe communication difficulties and allowed them to live their lives fully. ComputerWise was initiated to enable these individuals to develop computer skills and subsequently provide them with employment opportunities.
Services to Disabled Persons:
Adaptive Technologies
At ComputerWise, individuals who would otherwise have very limited employment opportunities are provided with varying levels of computer training, dependant upon prior knowledge and ability. Clients, supported by qualified Job Coaches, work on contracts to produce mailing lists and labels, perform wordprocessing, data entry, and accounting, and work on graphic design projects such as calendars, letterhead and business cards. ComputerWise clients receive compensation based on the number of hours worked. For many with severe disabilities, ComputerWise also offers a new and viable means of communication through adaptive technologies and online access and education opening up a world of possibilities and potential for those who are non-verbal or who have limited verbal abilities. One of our goals at the new ComputerWise facility will be to serve as an assessment and testing centre for manufacturers of various models of adaptive equipment and software. This is one area where ComputerWise clients are uniquely positioned to test and assess this type of equipment.
